UCAS, Personal statements, Oxbridge, private tuition in English

Gayle Wood private tutorUCAS and Personal Statement guidance, Oxbridge advice, private tuition.

Based in the Peak District but also able to offer some tuition in London, I have over 20 years’ experience teaching English Literature and English Language; my pupils consistently achieve As and A*s in their exams. I was recently graded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and my lesson was singled out for comment in the report: ‘Outstanding teaching seen was a poetry lesson in Year 11. All students were fully involved and able to build on the prior learning to establish meaning in all aspects. All were fully engaged and showed an impressive understanding of how poetry works.’

I offer:

  • Private tuition for English Literature and Language GCSE, AS and A level
  • Tailored guidance  for Personal Statements and UCAS applications
  • Preparation for Oxbridge application and the ELAT (Oxford)

Advice and guidance for applying to Oxbridge

Russell Group Universities applications

Over the last five years, I have successfully prepared many candidates for applications to Russell Group Universities and regularly attend relevant training sessions. My aim is to give as many students as possible the information, skills and experience to enable them to make successful applications. Part of my work as Sixth Form Tutor in a local state school involves supporting and guiding students through the UCAS process. This involves discussing and researching post- eighteen options; planning Personal Statements; finding appropriate study days, open days and lectures and proof-reading final applications. In addition, where applicable I guide them through admission tests and interviews.

ELAT

As Oxbridge coordinator for my state school in Derbyshire, I regularly attend training sessions at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Over the last five years, I have successfully prepared many students for the ELAT and for interviews. I provide guidance, up-to-date information, a wide range of resources as well as enthusiasm.

My highly focused preparation includes discussion of texts, past paper practice and feedback on how to tackle the tasks and the test. In addition, I can give them a mock interview.

I love teaching English literature and it is a real joy to be able help youngsters, many of whom thought that Oxbridge wouldn’t be interested in them, on their road to success.

My aim is to give as many students as possible the information, skills and experience to enable them to make successful applications to Oxbridge. Last year, seven students were offered places at Oxford and Cambridge to study a variety of subjects including Chemistry, Engineering, English, History, Medicine, Natural Science, Physics and PPE. I worked with all of them.

More often than not, students say, ‘I don’t have a chance of getting in.’

My reply is, “Well, if you don’t apply, you most certainly won’t! Why not give it a go?’

DSCF1661

Over the last five years, I have successfully worked with many candidates on their applications to University. Regularly attending  training sessions, I provide students with up-to-date information, skills and experience so they can make highly competitive applications. Part of my work as Sixth Form Tutor in a local state school is to support and guide students through the whole UCAS process. This involves discussing and researching post- eighteen options; planning Personal Statements; finding appropriate study days, open days and lectures and, finally, proof-reading  applications. In addition, where applicable I guide them through admission tests and interviews. The whole service is tailor-made  for each student.

I offer private tuition for:

  • GCSE English Language
  • GCSE English Literature
  • IGCSE English Language
  • IGCSE English Literature
  • A level English Literature
  • ELAT (Oxford University English Literature Admission Test)
  • Oxbridge Application

I have a very wide range of resources and materials from which I create tailor-made lessons for each student.

As well as providing past papers, mark schemes and exam reports I  diagnostically mark all work. In addition, I keep up to date with current thinking in the world of education, specifically English teaching, by attending conferences, courses and training events.

My students regularly achieve or exceed their predicted grades. In June 2013, 19 students out of  my GCSE class of 28  achieved grade A* or A in both Language and Literature. (This was the year GCSE  English results were downgraded) Moreover, 5 students achieved full marks in the summer Literature exam while 4 other students were either 1 or 2 marks below full marks.

In June 2013, 9 students out of my A level class of 15 achieved grade A* or A. Of those students, 6 of them achieved full marks in at least one module.

Eight of my students have gone on to study English at Oxbridge in recent years.

All of my three children went to the local state school and then on to Oxbridge.

In addition, I can offer London-based tuition with a Cambridge Graduate.
